Pencil Jockey

Product Code : SCL-MF-12375

Quick Answer: The Pencil Jockey is a sliding-contact accessory for potentiometer and Wheatstone bridge experiments, used to touch the resistance wire and locate the balance point.

Last updated: October 2026

Key Features

Makes temporary sliding contact on a potentiometer or bridge wire
Used to find the null point with a galvanometer
Supports EMF comparison and unknown resistance measurement
Teaches careful contact technique on resistance wires

About This Product

With the jockey connected into the circuit, the tip is placed gently on the wire and slid along without heavy pressure while students watch the galvanometer for null deflection. The wire length at the balance point is marked and recorded, and the jockey is lifted before connections are changed. Readings are repeated to improve reliability.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q1. Why should the jockey not be pressed hard?
Pressing hard or scraping can damage the resistance wire and its scale, so the contact is placed gently and slid lightly.
