The kit contains equipment and resources put together by our curriculum experts to facilitate the teaching of the Rocks and Soils topic in Primary Science.
The Year 3 Rocks and Soils Kit has been developed in-house to create an all-round classroom resource for investigating rocks, soils and their properties.
It has been tailored to meet the Key Stage 2 Science curriculum requirements of the Rocks and Soils Topic.
The kit contents include:
• Comprehensive lesson plans & classroom resources.
• Fossil Set containing the following : Trilobite, Echinoid, Shark Tooth, Brachiopod, Sectioned Ammonite, Ammonite, Bivalves, Plant, Sponge, Belemnite, Graptolite, Marine Reptile Bone, Crinoid Stem, Horn Coral
• 1kg bags of each of the following rock samples : Limestone, Chalk, Granite, White Marble, Sandstone, Pumice, Obsidian (with Rock Identification Cards).

The kit enables the teaching of the following :
• Describe, in simple terms, how fossils are formed when things that have lived are trapped within rock.
• Compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties.
• Recognise that soils are made from rocks and organic matter.
The kit also enables a cross-curricular approach with Geography, in that pupils should explore the different kinds of rocks and soils associated with different areas.
